Edelweiss Golf and Country Club

Last Saturday the Slammer Tour made a stop at Edelweiss Golf and Country Club, just outside of Wakefield, QC and it seemed like a good time to play the course for the first time.

As expected the course was experiencing  spring conditions, very wet, some winter kill on the fairways and rough and slower, shaggy greens. But, in spite of the conditions I could tell that the course had some potential to be quite nice during peak season.

I really enjoyed the layout of the course with a good mix of risk/reward holes and some no doubt about it tough holes (10 – 12 stretch were just plain old tough golf holes). While the course was not overly long, what it lacked in length it made up for with postage stamp size greens, none of which were flat.  The course also made good use of creeks throughout the 18 holes and was very scenic with the hills in the background of most holes.

The most memorable hole for me was the par 5 16th. Not a long hole and when played right a legitimate eagle chance awaits. Played wrong this hole could do a lot of damage to your score card. The dogleg left 480 yard par 5 is protected by a fairway bunker on the left and a gully on the right. The fairway slopes from left to right with a big dip between 250 – 150 yards out, anything catching the right side of the fairway or rough may run right through and down the gully when the course is  dry. If you can get over the left bunker you can catch the down slope and end up with only 150 or so yards into the green. You are straight uphill from 150 in, the green is protected by woods and bunkers on the right and a steep drop off long, but you can bail out on the left with no trouble. The green itself slopes from back to front and left to right and doesn’t present much undulation. Get off the tee well here and you should be looking at a shot for eagle or at least birdie.

My day was quite good. I shot a season best 77 with 3 birdies. I didn’t hit the driver great, but good enough to stay in play. The only real disappointment of the day was a couple of missed putts from inside 5 feet. In terms of the Slammer Tour event, I won my two matches (played as threesome), won 3 skins and 2 closest to the pins. The two individuals I played were both ranked lower than me, so there was no movement in my 125th ranking.

If I was rating the course I would give it a solid 6 out of 10, with a chance to be a 7 or 8 if I saw it in top shape.

See you at the turn,

Brewcee
